With idyllic ceremony locations set amongst breath-taking beauty that bests even the most exclusive wedding venues, it’s not difficult to see why couples choose to forgo traditional weddings altogether and instead choose to elope on the French Riviera.
I help organize and photograph elopements, advising couples on locations, logistics, and contacts, while ensuring they get a set of images that last a lifetime. Organizing an elopement in the South of France from far away can be daunting, but an informal ten-minute chat can often save days of online research and uncertainty. Usually, it begins with an exchange of messages followed by an informal call over a platform such as WhatsApp.
Why Elope? And Why in Southern Europe?
I think one of the most important aspects of an elopement experience is the ambiance, and what the best elopement locations in the South of France offer is a chance to connect with each other and with nature in an atmosphere that encapsulates escapism.
There’s an authentic, rugged natural beauty in these spots that’s enchanted people since antiquity (it was the Romans who first developed the South of France for well-to-do retired solders two-thousand years ago). More recently, the light, landscape, and colours of the area also inspired countless artists from elsewhere in Europe from Picasso to Van Gough.
Being from the UK, I’d argue Southern Europe also offers a marked cultural contrast if you’re used to a bustling Northern American or Northern European city but not so much as to induce anything like culture shock (unlike what happened to me briefly when I moved from the UK to Tunisia a few years ago!).
So, with some of the most beautiful ceremony locations being free to access and with an ambiance and setting that’s difficult to find in even the most exclusive venues, it’s not difficult to see why couples choose to elope in the natural beauty of the French Riviera.
How I Help Organize Elopements
I’ve been based in the South of France since 2021 and I use my local knowledge garnered from literally hundreds of weddings and photoshoots to help organize elopements to match couples’ priorities, tastes, and plans.
Choosing the best place for a beautiful ceremony can be daunting; but I know which locations work and in what lighting conditions; the best way to avoid crowds entirely; and all the logistical and practical advice people need. And, of course, I take photos.
I also recommend other suppliers whom I know personally and are reliable, kind, and reputable. These include the celebrant I work with, as well as car hire firms, drivers, florists, and make-up artists.
Idyllic Elopement Locations by the Mediterranean Sea
One of the most complex parts of my job is finding locations for clients, which is a balancing act between a place being beautiful and easy-to-get-to, while still offering privacy. There aren’t many locations in the crowded Cote d’Azur that offer all three; it’s nearly impossible in Nice (save for maybe, the Coco Beach coastal path), so it’s almost always worth travelling a short distance and being rewarded by a more serene, private atmosphere in a place you otherwise wouldn’t have known existed. The spot shown in the photos on this page are public, so they’re free to access and use just like any other public space.
Eloping with a Photographer
You want beautiful imagery but also privacy during the ceremony itself. My personal approach to addressing this issue and respecting couple’s privacy is to photograph the ceremony itself from a distance and using zoom lenses to document facial expressions. This way I can’t hear what’s being said and couples can just focus on being in the moment and don’t have to worry about privacy or interruptions.
The necessary close-up images, of ring exchanges for example, are usually set-up after the ceremony and inserted into the image collection in a way that makes the most sense chronologically. High-quality audio can also be captured thanks to wireless microphones linked to a separate camera.
All of my packages feature two photo locations – one for the ceremony, and another for a photo session in your attire elsewhere. This ensures variety, improves the overall quality of the image delivery, plus if we walk through a town or village you’ll discover the joys of most passers-by congratulating you and throwing compliments your way when they see it’s your wedding day.
Afterwards, you may not remember all the details of the day, but what you will definitely remember above all else is how all these experiences made you feel – and I see the photographer’s role as reinforcing those memories through storytelling and imagery.
My Photography Style
I have a photography style that’s super-relaxed and informal but you may want to see if you like it before we work together. There’s a whole library of images to browse on my blog and or Instagram feed and you’ll quickly get the idea. There’s no awkward posing and never anything forced or clichéd.
While my own style is what I naturally defer to, I’m also happy to work with any inspiration you’ve found online or any specific images you have in mind that you want to recreate. If you have a specific vision I’d invite you to show me a mood board that we can use to make sure you have the light, location, and feel. I work with an attentive and reliable videographer who is happy and flexible to take on board any creative input you may have.
Depending on the location, weather, and restrictions drone imagery and footage can be included as part of the packages.
Choosing a Celebrant for your Elopement Ceremony
If the elopement location is all about the ambiance, I’d say the most important thing about the celebrant is their personality and the dynamics of their relationship with the couple. I work with a celebrant who’s also from the UK called Sarah Hopkinson. What she does so well is instinctively understand the balance between ensuring proceedings retain the appropriate structure and gravatas while ensuring couples can be authentic and expressive.
Before each ceremony she interviews each partner separately and recounts a little of their history and some of the anecdotes behind the sparks, usually finding some humor along the way. It also injects some spontaneity into proceedings because no partner is quite sure what the other said during their interview.
Finding the right celebrant with the right personality is important, so if you’re in doubt I’d speak to the celebrant in person before making a final decision.
Pricing and Payment
As with traditional weddings, these elopement packages come with a simple photography contract which outlines costs, the date and location, and what clients will receive and by when. The contract is there for peace of mind and reassurance for both the client and myself. The cost of elopement ceremonies with a photography package and celebrant begins at 1249 euros and booking requires a deposit of 300 euros. The remaining payment happens after the images have been taken subject to approval of image samples.
