séance sur la plage en Afrique de Nord

Session de couple sur une plage de sable

This was my first ever couple photography session, which happened in Tunisia on a beautiful sandy beach, near Gammarth, which stretches for miles along the North African coast.

The subjects were volunteers and I had no idea how it would turn out - fortunately my subjects were super-easy to work with and up for trying some really crazy posing ideas I brought with me. Since the original photoshoot I've edited them into the style I like working with - which has a kind of retro feel, which muted colours, hazy light, and film grain.

The pictures were taken with the camera I had at the time, a Nikon Z6, it takes beautiful images, but doesn't have a great reputation for focusing on moving subjects. Despite owning a few exotic, expensive lenses at the time (a 85mm 1.4, for example) I resisted the temptation to bring them, and instead just brought one - a standard (and very boring in photography terms) 24-70mm. With no exotic lenses to rely on, it pushed me to create beautiful moments. I still use a lot of the posing (and I use that word very loosely!) ...ideas I used that evening, and I still absolutely love the images.

Bringing as few pieces of equipment as possible and getting beautiful results is what I love doing - I think the most minimal set-up I'm comfortable with is one camera and two lenses, a 35mm prime lens, and a 24-70mm zoom.

Sandy Beaches on the French Riviera

Believe it or not, there's not too many obvious sandy beach locations on the French Riviera. This is partly because much of the Riviera is crowded, partly because of the high number of stony beaches, and also because the shape of the coast also means often the sun sets behind land, making photography sessions awkward. There is a beautiful sandy beach in Antibes, Jean le Pins, but it is often crowded, has stone jetties jutting awkwardly into the sea, and also the location of the sunset isn't ideal.

There is another beach at Cannes La Bocca, however I've not yet had an opportunity to photograph there.
